BMW AG’s upcoming iNext electric vehicle will feature an oddly shaped steering wheel intended to make it easier for drivers to transition from automated to manual driving.

Inspired by race car steering wheels, the iNext’s multi-sided unit has rounded sides and a flat top and bottom. BMW says the design makes it easier for drivers to recognize the steering wheel angle—based on the position of the flat sides—when resuming control of the vehicle.
Color-coded fiber optics on the sides of the steering wheel indicate the availability of autonomous vehicle functions. The system also will prompt drivers when it is necessary for them to take control.
Other purported benefits of the iNext’s polygonal steering wheel include improved ingress/egress and greater visibility of the instrument cluster.
BMW plans to launch the iNext in 2021. The vehicle is expected to have a nearly 400-mile driving range based on the WLTP test cycle.RELATED CONTENT
