Volkswagen AG’s Bentley unit says it may offer an all-electric variant of its Mulsanne flagship sedan to meet future emissions standards n China and other global markets in coming years.
An EV may be the only way Bentley can sell vehicles in some Chinese cities, Hans Holzgartner, the product and marketing manager of the Mulsanne, tells Autocar. He says the carmaker hasn’t completely ruled out a hybrid architecture but at this point is leaning toward a full electric model.
Large sedans such as the Mulsanne are well-suited for electric power, Holzgartner notes, pointing to the technology’s strong low-end torque and smooth operation. But he adds that performance models such as the Mulsanne Speed likely would need to add sound effects to replicate the throaty exhaust tone of the car’s twin-turbo V-8.
Autocar opines that Bentley is more likely to add an electric variant to the current Mulsanne lineup, which was launched earlier this year, than wait for the next-generation model. In addition to offering such a model in China, which is one of Bentley’s largest markets, an electric Mulsanne also could be sold in the U.S. and Europe, according to the report.
