The increase hiked the job count among U.S. carmakers and their suppliers to 848,600, its highest level in nearly six years.
The BLS says the industry has now expanded by about 35,000 jobs over the past year and 225,000 jobs since General Motors and Chrysler Group emerged from bankruptcy in mid-2009.
The agency notes that the U.S. unemployment rate, which fell to 6.3% in April from 6.7% in March, was unchanged last month.
