Audi AG is developing a prototype electric vehicle that will use roof-mounted solar panels to help extend driving range.
The carmaker is working on the program with Alta Devices Inc., a division of China-based solar cell specialist Hanergy Thin Film Power Group Ltd. Alta Devices’ thin-film solar cells will be fitted to the panoramic glass roof of the unspecified prototype model later this year, according to the partners.
The electricity generated by the solar panels would be used to help power auxiliary systems, such as the air conditioner and heated seats. This would reduce the load on the primary battery to improve its efficiency and extend electric driving range.
The initial prototype will integrate a limited number of solar cells into the sunroof. Audi says future applications will cover the bulk of a vehicle’s roof with solar panels, which could eventually be used to help charge the primary traction battery.
Hanergy demonstrated its technology in four concept EVs last year. Alta Devices will build the Audi panels at its facility in California.
Toyota Motor Corp. offers a photovoltaic solar array on versions of its Prius PHV plug-in hybrid sedan in Japan and some other markets. The Panasonic Corp. supplied system is capable of producing 180 watts of electricity to power accessory systems, which Toyota says can boost fuel efficiency by as much as 10%. Nissan Motor Co. also offers an optional solar panel for its Leaf electric car.
Audi expects more than one-fourth of its lineup to be EVs or hybrid vehicles by 2025. The carmaker plans to launch three all-electric models by 2020, starting next year with a crossover vehicle based on its e-tron quattro concept.
