The first wave of direct competitors to Tesla Inc.’s Model X electric crossover vehicle is expanding with the impending debuts of luxury entries from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

The Audi e-tron will be publicly unveiled on Sept. 17. Mercedes EQC is due early next year. Both vehicles will join the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace sporty crossover, which went on sale late last month.

Audi says its 495-hp e-tron will be able to travel 500 km (311 miles) on a charge. Mercedes predicts a 400-km (249-mile) range for the TK-hp EQC. Those figures compare with 475 km (295 miles) for the Model X and 470 km (290 miles) for the 394-hp I-Pace.

All four EVs are purpose-built vehicles rather than electrified versions of crossovers that had been originally designed for piston power. All promise to replenish at least 80% of battery capacity in about 30 minutes when plugged into a high-power, direct-charge power source.

The Model X, which went on sale in 2016, has had the luxury EV crossover market to itself until now. Analysts predict the new entries from well-established carmakers will offer formidable competition.
