Audi AG is expected to introduce an electric crossover vehicle in three years that would compete with the Model X EV expected from Tesla Motors Inc. late next year.
CEO Rupert Stadler tells Bloomberg News the vehicle "probably" will be a crossover. The model would be the first developed by Audi specifically for electric power. Until now the company has created EVs by modifying its gasoline-powered models.
Like other carmakers, Audi needs electrics and hybrids in its lineup to meet upcoming European and U.S. fuel economy standards. The company debuted its first plug-in, the A3 e-tron small sedan, last summer and has said it will add more such powertrains at a rate of about one per year.
