Volkswagen AG's Audi unit has begun migrating its infotainment hardware architecture to a modular approach that will help it update system capabilities faster, Automotive News reports.

Audi's modular infotainment toolkit, or MIB, will enable the company to upgrade graphics cards while keeping most of the other computer hardware. The approach debuts in the A3 small sedan being launched now.

The modular architecture, already common in the rest of the consumer electronics market, will slash Audi infotainment system development time to two years from six years previously, according to Mathias Halliger, who oversees the brand's multimedia interface development. He envisions such updates being done during a model's mid-cycle update.

Like many carmakers, Audi plans to continue developing its own software.
