The American National Standards Institute has released its first effort to describe a unified body of standards, regulations and practices needed to make electric vehicles a viable industry in the U.S.

ANSI's 122-page Standardization Roadmap for Electric Vehicles report aims to point out gaps in codes, standards and training programs and suggest ways to address them by expanding existing options or creating new ones.

The report, which was prepared over the past 12 months by the institute's Electric Vehicle Standards Panel, notes that EVs won't be widely adopted unless challenges of cost, safety, performance, recharging and environmental impact are overcome.

The study discusses vehicles, infrastructure and support services in terms of energy storage, vehicle components, user interface, charging systems, infrastructure communication and education/training.

The analysis highlights 36 areas where it says better standards or regulations are needed. Among them: battery storage, waste battery handling, audible warning systems, wireless charging, battery swapping, emergency shutoff systems and charging station operation.
