Road & Track has selected the Acura NSX hybrid supercar as the magazine’s Performance Car of the Year for 2017.
Edging out eight other high-octane models, the NSX was deemed the best of the group by eight of the 10 R&T editors. The other two judges opted for the Lotus Evora, which finished second in the overall voting.
Third place went to the Corvette Grand Sport. The other cars evaluated by R&T were the Audi R8, BMW M4 GTS, Jaguar F-Type SVR, Mercedes-AMG C63 S, Nissan GT-R Nismo and Porsche 911 Turbo S.
The McLaren 570S also was up for the award. But editors weren’t able to fully assess the test car after one of them crashed it during the four-day evaluation process. Testing was conducted on-track and over the winding back roads of Kentucky and Tennessee.
Editors praised the NSX for being “confident and capable” and cited the “emotional involvement” it inspired among drivers. They also raved about the car’s brake-by-wire system, nimble handling and 570-hp hybrid-electric powertrain, which teams a mid-mounted 3.5-liter V-6 engine and 9-speed dual-clutch transmission with three electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack.
