European auto trade group ACEA now expects sales of new cars in the EU to expand 5% compared with the 2% rate it forecast previously.

Last year's sales totaled 12.6 million units, marking the first year-on-year gain in seven years. ACEA notes that sales this year grew nearly 7% in January-May.

The group's 5% growth forecast indicates full-year sales of 13.2 million units, the highest level since the 13.4 million level achieved in 2010.
