Robert Bosch GmbH has been helping make piston engines more efficient for decades. Now the company has developed an integrated electric axle that carmakers can use to turn a conventional vehicle into a hybrid or give an electric car all-wheel drive.

Heiko Weller, vice president of Powertrain Systems at Robert Bosch North America, says compact system will be ready for production by 2020. He notes that the design can be scaled to deliver 50 kW-300 kW of power (about 65 hp-400 hp).

Weller says flexibility is important, because carmakers are tailoring multiple powertrain strategies to meet regional market demands.
