The Obama administration is expected to approve new fuel efficiency standards for 2017-2025 by Aug. 15, The Detroit News reports.
The rules would require light vehicles sold in the 2025 model year to average 54.5 miles per gallon compared with 35.5 mpg in 2016.
The newspaper, which cites a spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, says NHTSA and the Environmental Protection Agency sent their proposal to the White House on Wednesday.
The White House Office of Management and Budget must approve the standards before regulators may publish them. The Obama administration originally planned to finalize the rules by July 31.
