The Obama administration has directed federal agencies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from their fleet vehicles at least 30% by the end of fiscal 2025.
To do so, agencies must by 2020 ensure that 20% of their new vehicle purchases are zero-emission or plug-in hybrids. The ratio must reach 50% by the end of 2025.
The executive order covers all agencies with fleets of at least 20 vehicles. The groups will be required to reduce vehicular greenhouse gas emissions 4% by the end of 2017, 15% by the end of 2021 and 30% or more by 2026.
The White House urges the agencies to review their current fleets and remove vehicles they don't need. It also wants them within two years to deploy unspecified vehicle telematics to improve fleet efficiency.
