Volkswagen AG plans to expand its global workforce to 600,000 employees by 2018 from 550,000 now, the company's top labor official tells German business daily Handelsblatt.

But most of those jobs will be added outside the EU in such countries as China, India and Russia, says Bernd Osterloh, chairman of VW's works council and a member of the company's supervisory board. Osterloh adds that VW also expects to hire more workers in the U.S. as it boosts production there.

The company currently has about 150,000 employees outside Europe compared with roughly 250,000 workers in Germany and 150,000 elsewhere in Europe.

The hiring spree will be part of VW's drive to surpass Toyota Motor Corp. as the world's top-selling automaker by 2018. Osterloh notes that VW expects most of its sales growth to occur in emerging markets.

Brent Donaldson, Senior Editor, Modern Machine Shop and Additive Manufacturing Magazine discusses how the shifting landscape of technology that all of Gardner’s writers and editors cover is a never-ending education. If we are truly doing our jobs, we will never feel like we’ve mastered them. As I continue writing and reporting for AM and MMS, it’s easy to imagine how these technologies’ interdependency will continue to grow. It also seems clear that this kind of reporting — the kind that requires editors to experience and share new manufacturing technologies and strategies — is the kind of reporting that only Gardner can produce with any depth. I’m grateful to be part of it.
