Volkswagen AG now plans to launch 70 new electric vehicles across its various brands within the next 10 years—40% more than the company previously announced.

The carmaker expects combined sales of the new EVs will total 22 million units over the decade. This compares with the company’s previous volume forecast of 15 million units.

The rollout starts this year with the ID compact hatchback in Europe. The hatchback is one of 27 EVs that will be built on VW’s MEB (Modular Electric Toolkit) platform (pictured). VW also is licensing the platform to other companies, starting with a deal with startup e.GO Mobile AG announced earlier this month.

VW also has is launching a “decarbonization” program that aims to make the company carbon neutral throughout its vehicle fleet and production and administration operations by 2050. The initiative calls for cutting carbon dioxide emissions of new vehicles and its manufacturing facilities by 30% and 50%, respectively, by 2025 compared with a 2015 baseline.

VW says it also is developing a comprehensive decarbonization plan for its suppliers. The company notes there is significant potential in this area in regards to aluminum and steel supplies.
