Reuters says Chinese officials have estimated more than 20 million vehicles in the country are equipped with the flawed Takata inflators. The devices have been blamed for at least 16 deaths and 180 injuries worldwide.
The VW recall will include 103,600 units by VW China and 2.4 million each by FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC Volkswagen, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The agency says the callback will begin next March and continue into 2019.
Reuters says 24 carmakers in China have so far recalled 10.6 million vehicles to replace Takata inflators. Five more manufacturers are planning to recall an additional 1.3 million units.
