Volkswagen AG will use this month's Beijing auto show to announce plans to produce plug-in electric vehicles in China with partner First Automotive Works, according to Reuters.
The news service cites company sources who say the vehicles are likely to be assembled at VW-FAW's new factory in Foshan. The plant began making Audi A3 small sedans and VW Golf five-door hatches last September.
The Foshan factory has initial capacity to make about 300,000 vehicles per year but will be expanded to 600,000 as demand warrants.
VW joins other foreign carmakers who are launching "green" vehicles in China. The companies are responding to Premier Li Keqiang's plan to "declare war" on air pollution.
