A balky fuel pump control module has prompted Volkswagen AG to announce plans to recall 280,900 cars in the U.S.
The campaign targets 2009-2016 VW CC sport sedans and 2006-2010 Passat sedans and wagons. All affected models are powered by 4-cylinder gasoline engines.
A combination of certain electrical load levels and pump behavior can cause the control module to overheat. The heat may exacerbate previous mechanical stress to the module and cause the module’s electronics to fail.
If that occurs, the module could cut off power to the fuel pump and make the engine stop unexpectedly. Or the module may allow the fuel pump to continue running when the car is parked, thereby leading to a dead starter battery.
VW discovered the problem earlier this year in vehicles sold in China. The company plans to notify affected owners in October about the impending recall. But it hasn’t yet determined when it will have parts available to begin repairs.
