Volkswagen AG is recalling 57,300 Golf hatchbacks and sport wagons in North America to fix a problem that could allow a parked vehicle to roll away.
The campaign involves 2015-2018 models with automatic transmissions but not a push-start ignition switch.
Affected cars have an electronic microswitch designed to prevent the ignition key from being removed unless the vehicle’s transmission is in Park. That switch can fail, thereby enabling the driver to remove the key when the car is still in gear or neutral. In either case, the vehicle could roll away after the occupants exit.
When the recall begins in September, dealers will install a second lockout switch and electronic circuitboard.
