Volkswagen AG is willing to extend warranties for two years on the cheater diesels it sold in Europe, but it continues to refuse to pay owners direct compensation, according to EC consumer affair commissioner Vera Jourova.
Her office says VW agreed to the extra warranty coverage. But Reuters says the company has declined to confirm that decision. instead, it said by email that is “cares for every customer” and reiterates its pledge to fix the 8.5 million affected cars in Europe by this autumn. VW adds that the emission control system updates won’t erode vehicle performance.
Extra warranty coverage would be the first concession VW has made to customers who bought its illegal diesels. Jourova and EC industry commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska have pressed VW for nearly a year to compensate customers in Europe as it is doing in the U.S., where its cash payments are averaging about $5,100 (€4,500).
