Volkswagen AG is preparing a global callback of nearly 700,000 of Tiguan crossover vehicles and Touran minivans to fix a ceiling-mounted lighting strip that could cause a fire, Kfz-Betrieb reports.
VW tells the German auto industry trade publication the recall will target all current-generation models produced through July 5.
The problem involves a ring of LEDs around the vehicles’ panoramic roofs. Moisture can short circuit the array’s power module and scorch the headliner. In extreme circumstances, the overheating could ignite the headliner and cause a car fire.
Kfz-Betreib says VW will begin repairs when it completes tests of an intended solution. In the meantime, VW says owners can continue to operate their vehicles until repairs can be made.
