Volkswagen AG confirms it will introduce an electric powertrain option for its seventh-generation Golf hatchback in mid-2014, according to the AutoBild.de.
The German enthusiast news service says the model, tentatively named E-Golf, will be offered in three- and five-door iterations and is likely to retail for about $53,800. The car will join the electric version of VW's smaller up! city car, which will debut in Europe this autumn.
The front-drive powertrain will house a 115-hp electric motor under the hood and package an unspecified battery under the rear seat and trunk, according to Auto Bild. It says the system, which will boost the Golf's weight by 200 kg (440 lbs), will provide a top speed of 135 kph (84 mph) and a range of about 270 km (168 miles) per charge.
Last autumn VW wrapped up a six-month roadshow that demonstrated 24 Golf Blue e-Motion prototype electrics to fleet operators in western Europe and Japan.
