Volkswagen AG has appointed Ewald Goessmann as executive director of its new Electronics Research Laboratory in Belmont, Calif. He succeeds Peter Oel, who is returning to VW's R&D unit in Germany.

The three-year-old California lab currently employs more than 140 engineers, scientists and futurists, according to VW. The facility's work focuses on advanced powertrains, advanced driver assistance, human machine interface, infotainment software and platform development and concept testing and validation.

Goessmann had been leading Audi's systems operation and display unit in Germany. He previously headed Audi's radio navigation systems applications. He worked at Siemens Automotive Systems before joining VW in 2000.
