Volkswagen AG is considering moving its sporty Scirocco coupe to the company’s new MEB electrical vehicle architecture.
Using an electric platform would allow the next-generation model to maintain the Scirocco’s emotional appeal, VW research and development chief Frank Welsch tells Auto Express. The British enthusiast publication notes the design also could increase interior space by eliminating the engine compartment.
The Scirocco has had a cult-like following since it was introduced in 1974. But sales have dwindled in recent years, shrinking the car’s global volume to less than 13,000 units last year as consumers continue to shift from cars to crossover vehicles.
Earlier this year VW board member Arno Antlitz indicated the company may discontinue the Scirocco when the current-generation model, which isn’t sold in the U.S., is phased out. The vehicle hasn’t been sold in the U.S. since the late 1980s.
