Volkswagen AG tells Autocar the company is developing an all-electric version of its updated Camper concept vehicle.
The front-drive van would be powered by a small electric motor and batteries mounted under the floor.
Board member Heinz-Jakob Neusser, who heads product development for VW, tells the British enthusiast magazine a compact electric drive would enable the new Camper to maintain the original rear-engine van's signature ultra-short A-pillar-to-front-end length.
Neusser adds that an electric powertrain also offers an attractive cost base that would make a production version of an updated Camper more feasible.
