Volkswagen AG and the IG Metall labor union will return to the bargaining table on Jan. 11 after staking out their positions in first-round wage negotiation late last week.
The union, pointing to VW’s financial rebound from its diesel emission cheating scandal, wants a 6% pay hike and improved pensions. VW made no counter-offer but asked for a “reasonable” settlement that will enable it to invest in future products and advanced technologies.
Last year IG Metall demanded a 5% raise. VW hourly workers ended up with a 2.8% hike in September 2016 and a 2% increase last August.
