Volkswagen AG tells analysts in Germany it must introduce its first purpose-built electric car by 2020 to meet impending carbon dioxide emission targets in Europe and China.
VW showed the first of the EVs in concept form as the I.D. (pictured) at last autumn’s Paris auto show, Automotive News Europe notes. The online newspaper says the company expects to approve a production version by August.
Two more electric-only models, also riding on VW’s new “MEB” platform for electric vehicles, are due by 2022. The first will be a crossover, which will be unveiled as a concept in April at the Shanghai auto show. That car will be followed by an electric minibus based on the I.D. Buzz concept VW presented in January at the Detroit auto show.
European carmakers are targeting fleet average CO2 emissions of 95 grams per kilometer by 2021, which all but dictates a sharp increase in EV sales. The industry’s average emission level in 2015 was 120 g/km.
