Volvo Car Corp. will relaunch its Polestar performance unit as a separate brand that markets high-performance electrified vehicles under its own name.
Future Polestar vehicles won’t carry the Volvo brand or logo, although the company will continue to offer performance-enhancing kits for Volvo vehicles under the Polestar Engineered moniker. The new company, which will compete with BMW AG’s “i” brand, will roll out its first model this autumn.
Thomas Ingenlath, currently its head of design, will become Polestar’s CEO. Ingenlath’s successor as vice president of Volvo design will go to Robin Page, who has headed interior design at the company for four years. Jonathan Goodman, Volvo’s senior vice president for corporate communications, will be Polestar’s chief operating officer.
Volvo acquired Polestar Performance in 2015 after collaborating with the engineering firm over the previous 19 years.
