Volvo Car Corp. will take the wraps off an electric variant of its XC40 compact crossover vehicle later this year, company officials tell Automotive News Europe.

The 2020-model XC40 will be the first fully electric Volvo-badged vehicle. The carmaker’s Polestar performance brand also is due to launch its first EV, the Polestar 2 sports sedan, early next year.

The traditionally powered XC40, with a range of small gasoline and diesel engine options, was launched in 2017. The vehicle rides on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture, which also will carry the Polestar 2.

No information was provided about the XC40’s powertrain or driving range. The Polestar 2 is powered by a pair of electric motors that generate 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque, while its 78-kWh battery provides an estimated 500 km (310 mile) driving range on the European cycle.

Volvo also plans to add plug-in hybrid variants (pictured) of the XC40 in coming years. Last month, CEO Hakan Samuelsson said the company will triple the production of the hybrid variants of four other models due to higher than anticipated demand.

Volvo plans to offer electrified variants of all its future models. EVs are expected to account for half the company’s sales by 2025.
