Volvo Car Corp. hopes to triple the combined production of its four plug-in hybrid models by year-end to meet greater than expected demand.

CEO Hakan Samuelsson expects the plug-in variants of the XC60 (pictured) and XC90 SUVs and V60 and V90 wagons to grow from a combined 10%-15% of the company’s global sales today to 20%-25% by the end of 2019.

Samuelsson says Volvo significantly underestimated demand for plug-in vehicles. He concedes that meeting the new production target will depend on how fast suppliers of batteries, electric motors and related components can ramp up their own output.
