Last year carmakers recalled 30.7 million vehicles in the U.S., the lowest volume since 2013, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The number of recall campaigns in 2017 dropped to 813 from a record 924 in 2016, NHTSA says.

Recalls peaked at 53 million cars and trucks in 2013, the year the Takata Corp. airbag inflator recalls expanded to include 19 carmakers. Those recalls alone are likely to eventually reach some 70 million vehicles.​​​​​
