Recalls by the seven top-selling carmakers in America grew to 13.5 million units last year from 12.5 million units in 2011, according to The Detroit News.
Toyota leads the list with 5.3 million vehicles recalled in 13 separate campaigns in 2012. Honda ranks second with 3.4 million vehicles and 15 campaigns.
Rounding out the top five are General Motors (1.5 million units and 17 campaigns), Ford (1.4 million units over 24 campaigns) and Chrysler (1.3 million in 13 recalls).
The News notes that vehicle recalls in the U.S. hit a record 30.8 million units and 600 campaigns in 2004.
