America added 214,000 jobs in October, helping lower its seasonally adjusted jobless rate to 5.8% from 5.9% in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. Unemployment was at 6.6% in January.

Manufacturing added 15,000 jobs last month. So far this year the sector has expanded by 170,000 positions, mostly in durable goods, according to the bureau.

BLS data show the economy's monthly employment level has grown by 200,000 jobs since February, the longest growth run since 1995. About 9 million people remain unemployed.
