The U.S. trade deficit widened by $700 million in September to $54 billion, the Dept. of Commerce reports.
The department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis says September exports of goods and services expanded by $3.1 billion to nearly $213 billion. But imports grew by $3.8 billion to nearly $267 billion.
The country’s deficit with China rose by $3 billion to $37.4 billion in September, as imports overwhelmed exports by $47.7 billion to $10.2 billion. The bureau says the deficit with Mexico dropped by $1.1 billion to $7.6 billion.
The U.S. trade deficit had been shrinking since February but began to climb again in June.
