The Trump administration has invited China to resume high-level trade talks and ease escalating trade tensions between the countries.
The two countries are already imposing tariffs on $50 billion worth of each other’s products. Trump is poised to impose a new round of taxes on another $200 billion in Chinese goods. He also says he has readied an additional $267 billion in levies that could be imposed on short notice.
Adding both new rounds of tariffs would push the U.S. total above $500 billion and cover virtually everything China ships to the U.S.
Trump bridles at China’s large trade surplus with the U.S. He also is frustrated by the country’s refusal to directly address his complaints that China extorts intellectual property from U.S. companies by making tech sharing a requirement to do business there.
The two countries have held formal trade talks on four occasions this year, but China has refused to budge on either of those issues.
