The Trump administration is pushing the European Union for “very rapid results” on trade talks that began last week, Reuters reports.
The U.S. hasn’t described the timetable it has in mind. But officials have been signaling that they hope to see progress within the next few months. Germany’s BDI industry group tells Reuters it hopes for an agreement that goes beyond tariffs to consider more general issues that impact business relationships between the two countries.
The talks were prompted by President Donald Trump’s aluminum and steel tariffs and threats of additional levies, including a 20% tax on cars imported from Europe.
Trump agreed to suspend action on the latter tariffs after he met with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker at the end of July. The two agreed after a three-hour discussion at the White House to launch trade talks.
