The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits dropped to 255,000 last week, according to the U.S. Dept. of Labor. It was the lowest monthly number of applicants since November 1973.

Analysts say the volume of filings, which has been below 300,000 for the past four months, indicates employers are retaining their workforces and expect more business growth in the second half of 2015.

The Labor Dept. reported earlier that June payrolls increased by 223,000 jobs, lowering the U.S. jobless rate to a seven-year low of 5.3%.
