U.S., Japan to Continue Working Level Trade Talks

Envoys from Japan and the U.S. have completed two days of working level talks in Washington, D.C., about a bilateral trade pact and will meet there again next week.
The two countries hope to reach broad agreement by the end of September, according to The Japan Times. The newspaper says President Donald Trump and Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also may meet on the sidelines of a Group of Seven meeting in France on Aug. 24-26.
Trade talks to date have focused on U.S. demands that its agricultural products gain greater access to Japan’s home market. Tokyo wants the U.S. to reciprocate by lowering tariffs on industrial products.
But sources tell the Times that the U.S. appears unlikely to make “substantial” concessions.
