Three former Takata Corp. executives have been indicted by a federal grand jury for wire fraud and conspiracy for falsifying reports about the company’s explosion-prone airbag inflators.
The indictment lists Tsuneo Chikaraishi, Hideo Nakajima and Shinichi Tanaka, all of whom left Takata in 2015. The charges say the executives and others knew in 2000 that the inflators were prone to misfire but falsified performance tests to hide the defect. The devices have been blamed for at least 16 fatalities and more 180 injuries worldwide.
The U.S. Dept. of Justice has issued arrest warrants for the three men. It isn’t clear whether any of them are in the U.S., and they are unlikely to be extradited if they are in Japan.
