U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer tells Congress that negotiators may reach an agreement with Mexico in August to update the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Lighthizer says he is relatively confident about a deal with Mexico by then. But he complains that Canada could be a stumbling block because of what he considers that country’s resistance to compromise. He opines that an agreement next month with Mexico could coax Canada back into serious negotiations.
Mexico’s outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto has said he hopes to sign a new NAFTA deal before he leaves office at the end of this year. That would require agreement soon, since U.S. trade law requires a three-month review before the participants can sign it.
