The average price of a gallon of regular-grade gasoline in the U.S. reached $2.04 on Monday, surpassing $2 for the first time in 2016, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.
Prices were at $1.74 a month ago and $2.43 a year ago. AAA notes that prices tend to peak in spring as drivers increase their travel and refiners begin a round of maintenance shutdowns to prepare for the summer driving season.
But analysts don’t expect any dramatic increases in fuel prices at least until autumn, because petroleum inventories remain high.
