The average price of a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. starts the week at $3.11, the lowest level for the period since 2010, says the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

About one-third of U.S. service stations are selling fuel for less than $3 per gallon. Missouri has the lowest state average: $2.90 per gallon, according to AAA. Hawaii, at $4.00, remains the costliest state.

U.S. fuel prices have been sliding since June. AAA notes that pump prices have dropped 9 cents in the past week and 25 cents in the past month. So far, oil producers aren't cutting back in spite of the decline.

Analysts point out that cheap fuel is hiking demand for already-popular fullsize pickup trucks and large crossovers. It's also denting demand for small economy cars and vehicles with fuel-saving hybrid powertrains.
