Gasoline prices in the U.S. are entering the Independence Day holiday at their lowest average for the season since 2005, says the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.
The nationwide average begins the week at $2.31 per gallon, down 3 cents from a week ago and 47 cents below the year-ago average, according to AAA.
The report notes that Americans are expected to record highs for miles traveled over the upcoming holiday weekend. Gasoline demand already is at an all-time high. But AAA says fuel inventories are rising and prices are declining, because refinery capacity is at its highest utilization rate since April.
Current gasoline price range from an average high of $2.90 per gallon in California to an average low of $2.00 in South Carolina..
