U.S. Fuel Prices Hold Steady

The average price of unleaded regular-grade gasoline in the U.S. has leveled off at $2.12 per gallon this month—the lowest for this time of year since 2004, according to AAA Gas Prices.

The average price of unleaded regular-grade gasoline in the U.S. has leveled off at $2.12 per gallon this month—the lowest for this time of year since 2004, according to AAA Gas Prices.

The daily price index notes that fuel prices began rising from less than $2 per gallon in mid-February. They peaked at about $2.40 in June before slowly declining through July.

AAA says 44% of refueling facilities nationwide currently are selling gasoline for $2 or less per gallon. Average prices are lowest in South Carolina ($1.81) and highest in Hawaii ($2.73).

Fuel prices aren’t likely to increase for at least several months, thanks to low oil prices and high gasoline inventories, according to AAA. It says the nationwide average price may even dip below $2 again this year after refiners switch to cheaper winter blends in mid-September.
