Average gasoline prices in the U.S. began this week at $2.23 per gallon, down 4 cents from a week ago and 53 cents below year-ago rates, according to AAA Gas Prices.
The auto insurance group says prices, which have declined steadily for the past 30 days, are likely to continue to drop through July. AAA points to weak petroleum prices and near-record domestic production of gasoline.
The report says current gasoline prices in the U.S. range from average highs of $2.88 per gallon in California to $1.93 in South Carolina.
