Trade negotiators from Canada and the U.S. had no progress to report Wednesday evening after a renewed effort to update NAFTA that began last weekend.

Canada’s Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland tells reporters that both sides are showing “good faith and good will.” President Donald Trump says the talks are progressing after declaring on Saturday that he would press ahead with a bilateral pact between the U.S. and Mexico whether or not Canada joins in.

A government source tells Reuters that Canada hopes for a fair and speedy outcome but is determined to take as long as necessary to achieve it. Neither side appears to have budged on Canada’s main sticking points: continued protection for its diary industry and retention of the North American Free Trade Agreement’s trade dispute mechanism.

As of last night, there was no apparent movement on either issue. “If we see some more flexibility (from the U.S.),” Reuters’ source says, “then I think we can start to see things moving in a good direction.”
