Federal safety officials have added at least 3.1 million vehicles to Monday's list of 4.7 million cars and trucks recalled in the U.S. the past two years to replace flawed airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corp.
Carmakers have so far recalled about 16 million vehicles worldwide to fix Takata-related airbag problems.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued the first consumer advisory on Monday, urging consumers to heed recall notices covering 45 models from six carmakers.
Toyota promptly advised owners of its recalled models not to allow anyone to sit in the front passenger seat until their vehicles are fixed. General Motors plans to issue the same advice for its affected customers.
On Tuesday NHTSA adjusted its listing and added four more manufacturers. The hastily complied update puts the new total at 7.8 million, not including an undetermined number of General Motors vehicles. The agency says it may change the numbers because some models could have been counted more than once.
NHTSA's confusion mimics that of Takata and carmakers over the past five years in trying to determine how many potentially explosive inflators were distributed and in which vehicles they were installed.
