The jobless rate in the U.K. declined to 5.4% in June-August, its lowest level since mid-2008, according to the Office of National Statistics.

The agency says 1.8 million people currently are unemployed, down by 79,000 from the previous three-month period. Analysts predict the healthy job market will encourage the Bank of England to raise its prime interest rate, now at -0.1%.
