Sales of pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid models soared 25% in the U.K. through June to more than 28,000 units.

Deliveries this year have increased every month over the preceding month, according to the Go Ultra Low consortium of carmakers and government agencies in the U.K. This includes a 10% hike from January-March to April-June, the group says.

Plug-in hybrids accounted for 78% of the first-half total. More than one-third of the sales were in the metropolitan London area.

The Nissan Leaf remains the top-selling EV in the U.K., with deliveries of more than 3,500 cars this year.
