The United Auto Workers union has agreed to spend $355 million to establish a voluntary employee benefits association for its own office staff. The VEBA will be similar to those created by the UAW in 2007 for its members at General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.
The UAW will spend another $8.5 million to administer the new healthcare trust, which will operate separately from the union.
The agreement ends a lawsuit by two office worker unions that represents the UAW's office employees: the Office and Professional Employees International Union and Staff Council of International Representatives. The suit was filed in December after the UAW unilaterally modified terms of benefits in 2013 and refused to arbitrate the changes.
